My short stories at Horace Mann had fooled me into thinking that I could be a fiction writer. I had no such skill. Yet I began by fictionalizing events from the teen tour and Amherst. I created characters from Lucy, Shelby, Betsy, Jynx, and the rest of the fourth-floor crew. I called it The Moon. Every fifth chapter was the mind-flow of a cosmic being in moonlight or an actual cratered landscape.
